Sanskrit Pronunciation Course

This Sanskrit course introduces the student to foundational concepts of accurate Sanskrit pronunciation. By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

· Understand the necessity and importance of correct pronunciation

· Pronounce each letter, basic sounds and complex words with an acceptable level of accuracy

· Distinguish correct pronunciation of text from incorrect pronunciation

· Correctly pronounce selected daily prayers and verses

Course materials:

The course is based upon the book “Sanskrit Pronunciation: A Comprehensive Guide” by HH Lokanath Swami. (Students may purchase this book from Amazon).

Some exercise sheets will be provided separately to support the student’s learning in between sessions.

Target audience:

Anyone who is interested in tuning one’s tongue to perfect Sanskrit phonetics. This is a beginner's level course but will cover the course contents in some detail. There are no pre-requisites for this course other than a recommended minimum age of 10 years.

NOTE: We will not cover the “chandas” or the meters in this course

 

About the Teacher

Parama Sundara Das

Parama Sundara Das connected with ISKCON in 2008 after he joined the Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School (BGIS) situated in the holy land of Vrindavan. Having completed his education at BGIS, he was initiated by His Holiness Lokanath Swami Maharaj at the age of 17. He had the great good fortune of learning the spiritual culture and vedic scriptures from an early age.

Under the instruction of his spiritual master, he studied Srila Jiva Gosvami’s Sri Harinamamrita Vyakaranam and the other Vaishnava scriptures for more than 4 years in Vrindavan. A Sanskrit scholar with expertise in Harinamamrita Vyakaranam, he teaches Sanskrit grammar and Sanskrit commentaries on Bhakti Shastras to devotees from around the world.

He completed the Bhakti Shastri course in 2014 from the Vrindavan Institute for Higher Education and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in the Sanskrit language. He serves in various capacities; editor, compiler, and proof-reader in his spiritual master’s book projects; translating the Acarya's’ works into Hindi and has also published translations of commentaries on Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s Siksastakam in a book form.
